In 2014, the British government became aware of the enormous risks posed to businesses – particularly SMEs – by cyberattacks. They also recognised that most of these risks were easily preventable. All companies needed to do was follow a set of basic security measures. So, in response, they created the Cyber Essentials scheme. The scheme covers the essential actions every business should take to ensure its digital security and protection from cyberattacks.
The Cyber Essentials certificate is an indicator of which businesses are displaying a commitment to security and data protection. Being certified reduces the risk of cyber-attacks to your business by 98.5%
The scheme assesses five technical controls:
Boundary firewalls and internet gateways – that you have a secure internet connection
Secure configuration – that you have the most secure settings turned on, on all your company devices.
User access control – that you have full control over who is accessing your data and services.
Malware protection – that you have protection in place against viruses and malware.
Patch management – that your devices and software are updated with the latest versions.
To achieve a certification, you must complete a questionnaire confirming your devices meet the above criteria. This is a self-assessment which is submitted for review by the Cyber Essentials certification body.
This is where Nimbus can help. Our cyber security experts can help guide you step-by-step through the application process to ensure that your systems and devices meet all the requirements and that you pass the assessment first time.
